When a repeat order arrives with a new carton of wooden gift blanks, mark and compare one blank from each lot before releasing the run. A file that produced a dark, crisp name last week may look softer or darker on fresh wood. The file and machine can be unchanged while the material response shifts.
The xTool wood material guide explains why species, tone and internal wood variation affect engraving. That guide does not provide TYVOK P2 settings. For an event order, the buyer's actual question is whether the next box will look acceptably consistent beside already approved pieces.
Keep the comparison fair
Save one approved physical gift from the original lot. Select a new blank with the same nominal finish and mark size, then compare them in the light where the gifts will be presented. Keep the same wording and artwork so material variation is visible. Record the supplier, lot identifier if available, material description and sample result. If the new blank is coated or of uncertain composition, stop and confirm compatibility before any laser exposure.

If the new lot fails the visual standard, obtain a closer lot or agree on an updated customer sample. Quietly mixing visibly different blanks within one table setting may create a quality problem even when every name is correctly spelled. Preserve the first approved sample so the comparison has a real reference.
Where P2 fits
The TYVOK P2 product page describes a compact blue-diode galvo tool suited to small personalized marks. Verify each blank fits the current setup and remains stable in its fixture. Test on known compatible wood, follow focusing instructions, ventilate and supervise. Do not transfer settings from a competitor guide or promise identical color across wood lots.
A wood-slice portrait makes grain variation especially obvious, but the same logic applies to names. For a batch with many distinct marks, the double-six domino inventory shows why a checked physical count matters as much as a completed digital job.
Is a new supplier carton automatically a new lot?
Treat it as a fresh material check unless the supplier can identify it as the same controlled lot. Even then, compare a physical sample if the order depends on a close visual match.
Can I fix a lighter result by running every blank twice?
Do not assume extra passes are safe or consistent. Test a sacrificial new blank, inspect charring and focus, and follow the actual material and machine guidance before any changed process.
