Grayscale Engraving: Prove Tonal Steps on One Sample

Treat a grayscale image as a tonal surface-mark experiment, not a promise of carved depth. Print a small ramp with labeled tone blocks on the exact approved material, then judge banding, clipping and repeatability after cooling and cleaning.

A useful ramp must include tones that fail as well as tones that work. Otherwise the operator learns only one attractive sample and cannot recognize clipped highlights or overloaded shadows on the next image.

Build the labeled grayscale strip

1. Preserve the source and export one grayscale working copy.

2. Add labeled 0–100% tone blocks beside the image.

3. Use one identified flat sample and the current P2 focus method.

4. Inspect highlights, midtones and shadows before changing a setting.

5. Repeat the accepted strip once to test repeatability.

Keep the tonal coupon under continuous observation; loose char, flame or smoke escaping capture closes the run.

Keep the ramp beside its cleaned sample so tonal judgment is not reconstructed from memory. Start with highlights: retain first visible mark without dirty background and apply the boundary 'Retain separation'. Then compare midtones without changing the recorded setup.

Grayscale questions from first tests

Does darker gray guarantee deeper engraving?

No. A blue-diode surface result depends on material, focus, processing mode and settings; grayscale is not a calibrated depth command.

Why did smooth shading become stripes?

The file, resolution, line interval, processing method or material response may compress tones into visible bands.

Can I use the same ramp on every material?

Keep it only as a layout. Requalify the exact substrate, coating and finish.

P2 wavelength boundary

P2 is the standard compact 450 nm semiconductor blue-laser galvo workflow. This test concerns visible tonal marking on an eligible surface; it does not turn P2 into a fiber, CO2 or relief-carving machine. The live TYVOK P2 listing is the authority for the selected regional package. Document the ramp substrate and finish; unknown plastic is not a discovery sample.
