Portrait Keychain Engraving: Crop for a Recognizable Face

Crop for the eyes, mouth, and face outline at the keychain’s final physical size. A beautiful full portrait can become unrecognizable when the face occupies only a few millimeters.

Calculate face size before editing

If a 30 mm-wide blank leaves 24 mm for artwork and the face occupies 40% of the crop width, the face will be about 9.6 mm wide: `24 × 0.40 = 9.6 mm`. Print that crop at 100% or view it against a millimeter ruler. If the eyes merge at that size, tighter cropping is more useful than adding pixels.

Crop check Pass evidence Correction
Eye line Both eyes remain distinct Crop closer; reduce background
Mouth and jaw Expression survives reduction Lift local contrast carefully
Highlights Forehead and cheeks retain detail Recover clipped tones
Quiet border Face does not touch hardware Reposition within measured area

Use one representative supplier-confirmed coated blank. Resize first, convert to grayscale, set black and white points without erasing facial features, and apply only enough sharpening to clarify important edges. Judge the physical proof under ordinary viewing light, not at 800% zoom.

What P2 can and cannot prove on a keychain

P2 is a compact 450 nm semiconductor blue-laser galvo workflow, not a fiber or CO2 machine and not a metal-first system. Confirm the live configuration on the TYVOK P2 page. Qualify the exact identified coating and substrate; a successful coated blank does not imply that bare metal or another unknown metal will mark. Keep the machine attended and follow current guarding, extraction, fire, and material instructions.

For a business-ready sample set, use Build a Logo Sample Box Before Pitching Local Businesses. For mixed low-volume blanks, Low-Quantity Branded Goods: Build a Sample Matrix explains how to separate surfaces.

Buyer FAQ

Will a higher-resolution photo always produce a clearer face?

No. Resolution cannot rescue a face that is physically too small or has clipped tones. Test the final dimensions.

Should every facial detail be sharpened?

No. Over-sharpening creates halos and emphasizes skin texture. Protect recognition features first.

Can TYVOK P2 engrave any metal keychain?

No. It is a blue-laser workflow, not a metal-first system. Use only an exact identified coating/substrate combination that passes current compatibility review and a supervised proof; do not imply bare-metal capability.

Photo-preparation reference

A three-crop proof

Prepare three crops from the same source: head-and-shoulders, face-only, and face with one identifying accessory. Keep the face width written beside each version. Output them on the same identified coated sample so material response stays constant. Ask the reviewer to identify the person without seeing the original photograph, then record which crop succeeds. This separates recognition from personal preference and prevents a larger background from winning merely because it looks better on a monitor.
