Set the sculpture's finished dimensions, rib spacing and actual material thickness before cutting the complete layout. Resizing a sheet of rib drawings can change the slots without changing your cardboard. It can also distort the reconstructed depth if the spacing between slices is left at its old value.
A Fabricademy project documenting scan-to-sliced sculpture works through mesh preparation and an interlocking cardboard form. It is a useful example of translating a digital volume into physical sections. The construction still depends on the relationship between the section positions and the stock used to connect them.
Three dimensions need three deliberate decisions
The outline of each rib describes part of the silhouette. The distance between ribs describes how that silhouette develops through depth. Slot width governs the local connection. These quantities are related, but they are not interchangeable.
For an illustrative calculation, ten parallel slices separated by nine 20 mm center-to-center intervals span 180 mm between the first and last center planes. Outside material faces add their own contribution to total depth. This is a geometry example, not a recommended sculpture specification.
Measure the card at multiple points without crushing it. Use only documented laser-safe stock with known coatings and adhesives; recycled packaging of unknown composition is not an automatic substitute. Follow the machine's fire-control and extraction requirements, attend the cut continuously, and clear loose offcuts. Limit the object to decorative prototyping rather than load-bearing or medical use.
Prove one crossing before nesting every rib
Prepare a small crossing pair from the intended stock. Check that it assembles without tearing or excessive compression and stays in the designed position. If the fit needs adjustment, revise the slot geometry before duplicating it through the entire model. A successful joint does not prove the complete sculpture is stable.

The TYVOK X1S 2026 is described with an 800 × 800 mm starting area and an 800 × 2000 mm expansion path. Extra layout length can accommodate more ribs, but does not repair an open mesh, calculate spacing or guarantee assembly fit. Generate and verify the geometry in an appropriate supported design workflow.
Can I enlarge an existing rib layout by 150 percent?
Only after checking every affected dimension. Slots enlarged with the outline will no longer necessarily match the original card. Recalculate section positions and rebuild a crossing sample. The distinction between continuous relief and assembled layers also helps identify whether the source file represents the process you intend to use.
Do I need ribs just to check whether a part fits a box?
Not always. A flat board-outline mockup is simpler when the question concerns perimeter and mounting locations. Use volume reconstruction when height, profile or spatial relationships are actually the unknowns.
