Topographic Map SVG: Choose Flat Engraving or Stacked Layers

Decide whether a terrain map will be a flat contour engraving or a stack of cut elevation layers before laying out a large wood sheet. The two outputs may begin with the same geography, but they require different files, stock, assembly and detail checks. A customer who asks for tactile relief needs more than a densely engraved contour image; a flat wall panel may not benefit from a thick stack.

Make the choice before export

Start with the intended viewing distance and physical size. For a flat panel, prioritize readable major contours, labels and boundary lines. For a stack, identify which elevation bands become separate physical pieces, how they will align, and how tall the final assembly will be. Do not convert every closely spaced contour into a fragile thin ring just because the SVG contains it.

Compare the exported SVG with an independent map of the area. Check that water, peaks and roads do not become false cut lines. Label layer order outside the visible artwork, then test a small piece. A file that opens without errors is not geographic validation.

Can a flat engraving look three-dimensional?

Shading and line weight can suggest depth, but the surface remains flat. If physical relief is part of the order, test a layered sample and discuss the resulting thickness.

No. Check geography, line closure, minimum bridges, stock thickness, assembly order and usage rights. Then test a small area with the selected machine and material.
