LightBurn's Position Dot Moved: It Is Not a Saved Job Origin

LightBurn's on-screen position dot is an indicator, not a saved promise about where the next job will start. When a connected controller supports position reporting, the marker can follow the machine. Choose and verify the starting mode instead of trying to keep the dot in one place.

In a September 14 forum question, a returning user expected the position dot to stay fixed after cutting. The distinction matters on a small A1 Mini layout: current position, user origin and the drawing's location are different references.

Read the three references separately

LightBurn's coordinate guide explains the start modes. Absolute Coordinates uses the drawing's position within the machine workspace. Current Position locates the job relative to the head's starting position and the selected job-origin point. User Origin uses a reference that has been deliberately set through the supported workflow.

Do not assume that choosing a mode creates homing switches or makes a lost physical reference valid. Follow TYVOK's setup instructions for the actual controller. If the machine has been moved by hand, disconnected or reset, establish its reference again as the documented procedure requires.

A simple placement thought experiment

Imagine a small plaque whose left corner rests against a fixture. If a Current Position job starts with the head at a different point, the same artwork can move on the plaque. Returning the drawing to the middle of the screen will not necessarily restore the earlier physical placement.

Keep the artwork unchanged while diagnosing this. Record the start mode, selected origin point and intended fixture location, then use the documented framing process with the required safeguards. If the frame is not wholly inside the usable marking area, stop before engraving and correct the reference.

The A1 Mini lists a 120 × 130 mm area and LightBurn workflow support. Confirm its device setup and do not infer automatic homing or an included software license from that listing. A position marker on the screen is also not a physical red aiming beam.

Save a configuration comparison once repeatable placement is established. If a tutorial uses a different machine architecture, check why galvo positioning controls differ before applying its buttons to your setup.

Can I drag the dot to set the machine origin?

Do not treat dragging artwork or a screen indicator as an origin-setting operation. Use the explicit origin procedure documented for the supported controller and confirm placement by framing.

Does a correct frame prove the material settings are right?

No. Framing checks the intended boundary and placement. Material identity, focus and processing settings still need their own approved sample.
