Documented Leather Names: Compare Fiber Direction Before a Batch
Do not test leather until the supplier composition, SDS, and current manufacturer guidance confirm compatibility. Then compare the name in both fiber orientations on a labeled coupon before arranging the batch.
Apply the material gate before layout
Exclude chrome-tanned or chromium-bearing leather, PVC or vinyl-backed faux leather, halogenated material or coatings, and any unknown finish or adhesive. Vegetable-tanned leather is not automatically safe: it must be documented chromium-free and currently compatible. Record supplier, SKU, lot, tanning method, thickness, finish, backing, and adhesive.

Use the longest name, smallest approved text, and thinnest stroke from the real order. Place one copy along the fiber and one across it, without changing font, size, or spacing. Inspect distortion, edge definition, contrast, and repeat placement. The accepted coupon defines orientation for that identified lot only.

Why can two leather tags mark differently?
Fiber direction, thickness, tanning, finish, moisture, and lot variation can change the result; compare only fully identified stock.
Can I rotate names to fit more tags?
Only if the approved fiber orientation, face, fixture datum, and readability remain unchanged.

Read distortion separately from contrast
A darker name is not automatically the better orientation. Place a ruler beside each coupon and compare letter height, baseline straightness, narrow counters, and spacing after the material has returned to room condition. If one direction stretches the name or closes small counters, reject it even when contrast looks strong. Keep the two coupons attached to the material record so the batch operator can match the arrow, face side, and accepted lettering without relying on memory. Record the narrowest closed counter as a measurable acceptance check.
