Kerf Offset Looks Right? Read Its Unit Before Cutting

Read the unit beside a kerf-offset value before judging whether the number is reasonable. Correctly sized artwork can still produce an unexpected toolpath when an offset is entered in the wrong unit. Preserve the original geometry while you investigate; scaling the whole drawing can create a second problem.

A September LightBurn screen-versus-preview discussion traced squeezed-looking finger geometry to confusion around 0.063 inches and approximately 1.6 mm. Those values describe the reported unit comparison, not a recommended kerf setting for any TYVOK material.

Separate the drawing from the cutting path

LightBurn's Line Mode documentation explains that Kerf Offset changes the path around closed shapes without changing the underlying drawing. This distinction is useful when a dimension box looks correct but Preview shows an unexpectedly expanded or contracted result.

Check a known overall dimension in the artwork first. If that dimension is already incorrect, investigate import scale using a reference square. If the dimension is correct, leave it alone while checking the offset.

For a simple dimensional illustration, 0.10 inches equals 2.54 mm; 0.10 mm is much smaller. These are arithmetic examples, not cutting instructions. A familiar-looking decimal does not carry its old unit with it when copied into another control or written in an incomplete setup note.

Read back the entry as a complete quantity

Record the signed value and the displayed unit together. Compare them with the measured and qualified process record. If that record lists only a number, stop and resolve its meaning before approving the file.

Use a working copy to compare the compensated preview with an uncompensated reference if necessary. That comparison explains the software transformation; it does not replace a physical fit sample.

Keep finger width and projection length distinct too. A flush-sanding allowance for box fingers deliberately leaves material beyond a finished surface. It should not be introduced accidentally through a misunderstood offset.

Apply the check before repeating a panel

The TYVOK X1S Pro is listed for an 800 × 2000 mm large-format diode workflow. Confirm its actual configuration, software profile and suitable stock. Repeating an incorrect offset across a large layout repeats the error; nominal area cannot determine a valid compensation value.

After correcting the file, retain the entry with its unit and the accepted sample identification. Avoid attributing a unit-entry mistake to firmware or an automatic conversion fault without evidence.

Kerf-entry questions

Should I enter the measured full cut width directly into every offset control?

Do not assume that interpretation. Confirm the software control's definition and your measurement method, then qualify the resulting path and fit. Different conventions can turn a plausible measurement into an incorrect entry.

If the outside size is correct, can the joint still be wrong?

Yes. Overall geometry and the path used to cut its boundaries are separate checks. Inspect the compensation and test the actual mating features before releasing repeated parts.
