Small Text Laser Engraving: Find the Minimum Readable Size
A descending type ladder on the exact qualified blank shows the minimum readable size more reliably than zooming into artwork on a monitor.
Small engraved copy often fails at counters and narrow gaps before the full letter disappears. Buyers need a readable-size boundary on their actual coating rather than a theoretical font-size claim. Demand source.
Build the size ladder
Set one short phrase in the released font at descending physical cap heights. Keep weight, spacing, and coating fixed. Include the intended size plus one step above and below it so the decision is based on a boundary rather than a single convenient sample.
Judge at normal distance
Ask two readers who did not prepare the file to read each line at the distance and light expected in use. Magnification is useful for diagnosing broken strokes but cannot define normal readability. Record the smallest line both readers identify without guessing.
Set a conservative minimum
Choose the next larger size when the boundary line has closed counters, merged characters, or inconsistent recognition. A different font, coating, or blank shape needs another ladder. The result is a design minimum for that tested condition, not a universal P2 resolution claim.
Evidence record for minimum readable text
| Decision point | Evidence to keep | Hold condition |
|---|---|---|
| Typeface | released font and weight | avoid untracked substitution |
| Sizes | descending physical heights | include the target range |
| Distance | normal viewing distance | do not judge only under magnification |
| Reader check | two people read unaided | raise the minimum if uncertain |
Release rule for minimum readable text
Set the production minimum one step above any size that either reader guesses, or that shows merged counters or broken strokes at normal viewing distance.
TYVOK P2 boundary for minimum readable text
TYVOK P2 is a compact 450 nm semiconductor blue-laser galvo workflow, not a fiber or CO2 system. Confirm the current power path, controls, software, accessories, regional configuration, and exact material guidance on the live page. Qualified coated-surface results do not prove bare-metal marking, permanence, scan reliability, or regulatory traceability. Buyer questions about minimum readable text
What is the smallest readable laser text?
The smallest acceptable size is the first ladder step reliably read at normal distance on the tested surface.
Do bold fonts always engrave better?
No. Bold weight can close counters and merge letters; compare the actual font physically.
Can the same minimum size be reused on another coating?
No. A different coating changes edge and contrast, so repeat the ladder.
