LightBurn Assign vs Link: Which Settings Change Later?

Use Assign when you want a layer to receive a copy of a material preset that can then be adjusted independently. Use Link when you intentionally want the layer to follow the library preset. Decide which relationship you need before approving a repeat job, because the same starting values can behave differently after the preset changes.

LightBurn's current Material Library documentation distinguishes these operations. Assign separates the copied layer settings from later library edits. Link creates a dependency on the selected preset, so check that relationship when revisiting a repeat order.

Walk through a repeat-order example

Imagine a shop has an accepted engraving setup for a batch of labels. An operator later experiments with a revised interval for another material lot. If the experiment changes a preset used by linked layers, those dependencies matter when the older job is revisited.

With assigned settings, the earlier layer has an independent copy. That does not make it permanently protected: an operator can still edit it. With linked settings, saving the old job name is not a sufficient reason to assume its process values will always remain unchanged.

Before experimentation, duplicate the relevant preset under a clear trial identity and use a separate project copy. This keeps the trial distinguishable from the accepted setup. Compare the actual active settings before running either job, rather than deciding from the file name alone.

No choice removes the need for a material test when the stock or machine conditions change. A copied preset can be inappropriate for new material; a linked preset can be correct only if its current values are appropriate.

Check the value, the relationship and the evidence

Record which preset was used and whether it was assigned or linked. Keep that information beside the accepted sample and relevant machine setup. When investigating an unexpected change, compare all three: the active layer values, the library entry and the intended relationship.

If the Library window is empty, resolve the missing file first. Locating the saved material library addresses recovery, while the present decision concerns what happens after a preset is available.

Multiple open windows introduce a separate persistence issue. LightBurn's last-closed-window preference behavior should not be confused with a linked material dependency.

The TYVOK X1S Pro product listing describes a large-format diode setup with LightBurn workflow messaging. Confirm the exact device configuration before using library settings. Its 800 × 2000 mm nominal format does not make a preset transferable between machines, modules or stock lots.

Preset questions

Does Assign update the library if I edit the layer afterward?

The documented relationship is independent after assignment. A local layer edit does not by itself revise the source library entry; make an intentional library update only when that is the desired change.

Is Link always the better option for repeat production?

Only when following the shared preset is intentional. A job requiring independently controlled values may need a different relationship. Inspect the actual settings again before output, whichever method you choose.
