Choose a clock movement against the finished face assembly, including every layer between its body and retaining nut. The center hole must suit the actual shaft, and enough usable thread must remain for the manufacturer's mounting hardware. A shaft described only as “long” is not a measurement.
A parametric clock-face project includes the movement shaft hole among its design parameters. That demonstrates interest in matching a cut face to real hardware. Checking the entire thickness stack is the practical next step; a correctly drawn circle alone cannot establish a usable clock.
Put the hardware beside the material
Before enlarging a decorative face, obtain the movement's dimensional drawing and inspect the actual parts. Distinguish overall shaft projection from the threaded mounting section. Also identify the washer and nut that belong to that movement. The space needed for hands above the dial is a separate measurement.
As a hypothetical example, two nominal 3 mm layers create a nominal 6 mm face before adhesive or a backing piece is counted. Do not order hardware from that arithmetic alone. Measure a representative bonded sample after curing, then compare it with the movement supplier's mounting specification.
An ornamental center disc can add thickness exactly where the shaft passes through. Conversely, an open decorative layer may not occupy that location at all. Sketch a section through the center instead of adding every material in the project indiscriminately.
A hardware coupon saves the large face
Cut a small center-hole sample from documented laser-compatible material using the intended assembly. Away from the machine, fit the movement, washer and nut by the supplier's method. Do not force hardware through a tight opening or solve a short shaft by omitting required parts.

The TYVOK X1S 2026 offers an 800 × 800 mm starting format and an 800 × 2000 mm expansion path. That helps with face layout, but it does not establish motor torque, mounting strength or suitability for unusually long hands. Obtain those limits from the movement and mounting suppliers.
Can I use a longer shaft and fill the gap with extra washers?
Use only a mounting arrangement the movement supplier accepts. Extra spacers can affect engagement or hand position. Select the specified shaft length for the measured face instead of improvising around unsuitable hardware.
Will scaling the clock drawing preserve hardware fit?
No. Decorative dimensions may scale, while the purchased shaft remains unchanged. Restore the bore to the hardware requirement after resizing. Recheck clock-number placement independently, especially on a square face. This distinction between visual scale and fixed physical thickness also matters in sliced assemblies; scaling a drawing cannot change the stock or hardware already on the bench.
