Read a Vernier Kerf Gauge Without Rounding the Scale

Do not round a vernier kerf gauge upward when its top reading lies between two numbers. On LightBurn's specific downloadable test, the upper scale supplies the whole number and the matching lower mark supplies the decimal. Use the calculation supplied with that exact gauge, then prove the resulting fit on the material you actually cut.

A recent LightBurn forum question asks whether a reading between 2 and 3 should be rounded. It is an understandable mistake: the upper scale looks like a ruler, while the lower scale appears secondary. The lower alignment is precisely what resolves the fraction.

Read the two scales as one value

Follow the official vernier test instructions for preparing and assembling the downloaded file. They specify zero kerf compensation for the test cut, removal of the discard piece and sliding the loose pieces together in the prescribed direction.

Read the largest whole number passed by D, then find the lower scale mark that aligns best with a border mark. For this gauge, those values form D.E and the supplied calculation divides that number by 40. If your actual reading were 2.5, the calculation would be 2.5 ÷ 40 = 0.0625 mm. That is an example of reading the gauge, not a recommended X1S setting.

Keep the full calculated value in your notes even if the software displays fewer decimal places. Do not silently replace a fractional reading with the next integer.

The TYVOK X1S 2026 offers a large-format diode workflow with an 800 × 800 mm starting configuration. You need only a small piece of compatible stock for this measurement. Its broad layout area does not give every wood species, thickness or module the same kerf.

If the loose pieces resist seating because they have rough debris or were not cut through cleanly, do not force them and treat the resulting number as precise. Inspect the sample and repeat a valid test. Keep the failed piece beside the replacement until you understand which condition changed.

Apply the result to the right problem

Before entering compensation, check the unit shown beside the kerf control. A correct number entered with the wrong unit is still wrong. Preview the compensated paths and make a small mating sample before committing a large sheet.

An allowance for sanding finger joints flush is a separate design decision. Keep it separate in your notes so changing surface finishing does not quietly become a new kerf measurement.

Does the divisor 40 work for a homemade gauge?

Only if its design and instructions establish the same relationship. A different number of cuts or a resized pattern can require different mathematics. Use the formula for the exact test file rather than copying a familiar divisor.

Can I reuse yesterday's result on thicker plywood?

Treat it as a starting record, not confirmation. A new thickness or stock construction changes the cutting task. Test the new combination, inspect a mating sample and save its own result before repeating parts.
