TYVOK P2: A Depth Map Is Not a Relief Engraving Mode

Importing a depth-map image does not give the TYVOK P2 an automatic relief-engraving mode. A grayscale picture can describe a desired shape, but the machine still needs a supported method to translate that information into controlled material removal. Ordinary shaded engraving and a measured relief surface are different deliverables.

LaserPecker's LP5 embossed-engraving tutorial treats depth maps and its embossing workflow as a dedicated process. That is evidence of a feature-specific workflow on another product, not permission to assume the same behavior on P2 or to transfer its settings.

Decide whether the customer wants appearance or geometry

Show two plain descriptions before preparing the job. “A flat picture with shading that suggests a raised shape” describes appearance. “A surface with specified high and low regions” describes geometry. A customer can approve the first without needing a sculpted object; the second requires evidence beyond a photograph.

If the brief calls for a relief, ask how the finished surface will be judged. Is a particular recess depth required? Must neighboring areas have a measurable height difference? Does an edge have to mate with another part? These requirements cannot be confirmed by the darkness of a mark.

Why extra passes are not a depth control

The number of repeats is an input, not a measured surface height. A dark region does not report how much material was removed. Increasing repeats without a confirmed process can damage a sample while leaving the original geometry requirement unanswered.

Do not troubleshoot the absent feature by repeatedly processing a valued item. First ask TYVOK whether the selected P2 configuration and software support the requested operation. If they do not establish that support, offer a normal decorative image only when it meets the buyer's goal, or choose a separate validated process for the relief.

For a tonal image, the existing photo shadow proofing approach evaluates image appearance on the actual blank. Keep that comparison about visible detail; it should not be presented as depth measurement.

Choose an honest physical sample

The P2 product information gives a compact 60 × 60 mm work area and selectable head options. Neither an area specification nor a software compatibility mention establishes automatic depth control. Confirm the exact configuration instead of relying on another brand's tutorial interface.

If the goal is a physical three-dimensional form made from separate flat pieces, sliced-sheet sculpture planning is a different construction method. It can be considered as a design alternative, but it is not a P2 embossing feature and will not reproduce every continuous relief.

Can a depth-map PNG still be used as a normal image?

Possibly, through the supported image workflow for the selected setup. It must be judged as a tonal picture on a suitable material. File readability alone does not make its gray values correspond to physical depth.

Does a darker sample prove a deeper recess?

No. Darkness is a visual observation. If depth is part of the requirement, it must be assessed physically using an appropriate measurement method after processing, and the process itself must first be supported and qualified.
