Butterfly Book Holder: Rework Spacers for 3 mm Stock

When a book-holder pattern is adapted from a thicker assembly to verified 3 mm stock, test the spacers and interlocking slots as a pair. Cutting every visible butterfly panel first can leave an attractive pile of parts that rocks or slips together. A small joint coupon and one assembled support reveal the fit before full-sheet work.

Separate thickness from slot width

Measure actual material with calipers at several places. Nominal 3 mm plywood can vary, and glue or printed surface treatment can add thickness locally. Draw a small test with a base slot, upright foot and planned spacer. Cut it from the same verified sheet and assemble by hand after the machine stops. The support should seat without splintering, fall-out or a forced bend.

Book mass and center of gravity matter: a tall cookbook stresses the holder differently from a thin paperback. Test the intended use, then revise dimensions from the measured fit. A cut file preview alone cannot establish mechanical stability or the strength of the selected plywood.

Can I simply scale a 6 mm design to 50 percent?

No. Overall height, book-rest angle and load path would change along with slot widths. Rework the joints and spacers locally, then test the complete support.

Should a tight joint be forced together?

Stop before splitting thin plywood. Measure the part and slot, revise the test coupon, and only then recut the affected component.
