Center Line Trace Adds Spurs? Check the Source Pixels

Unwanted branches after Center Line Trace often begin in the bitmap, where rough edges and uneven strokes change the calculated center of a shape. Compare the trace with the source at each junction before deleting short segments. Some short branches are noise; others are essential parts of the drawing.

The LightBurn 2.2 RC1 Early Access announcement specifically warns that low-resolution input can produce offshoots during medial-axis tracing. Evaluate this software feature on copied artwork only. It has not been tested here on TYVOK hardware, and your approved stable production workflow should remain available.

Inspect one troublesome junction first

Choose a small section containing both a visible defect and a legitimate branch. A handwritten letter, for example, may have a tiny intentional hook beside a rough pixel bump. Comparing those two features shows whether a cleanup choice removes only noise or changes the character itself.

Keep the original image beside the traced vectors. Zooming the vector alone makes every branch appear mathematically precise, even when its source was a compression artifact. If a better scan or original vector file exists, obtain it before investing time in node-by-node repair.

The earlier distinction between outline tracing and a single centerline explains the overall path style. Here the problem is narrower: unexpected branches within the centerline result, especially where the source stroke widens, turns or breaks into pixels.

Compare changes instead of applying maximum cleanup

The official Trace Image reference describes controls for ignoring small areas, smoothing and optimization. Adjust one setting at a time and retain the previous result. Aggressive cleanup can remove meaningful detail along with defects.

Upscaling the same small bitmap does not recover information absent from the original. A larger pixel grid may change how processing behaves, but it is not proof of a more accurate drawing. Judge the resulting geometry at the final physical size, not only at a comfortable screen zoom.

Why a large X1S drawing needs a small proof

Enlarging line art on the TYVOK X1S 2026 can turn a barely visible spur into an obvious extra mark. Its advertised workspace starts at 800 × 800 mm; expansion can extend it toward 800 × 2000 mm. Test a representative section at its final scale on known compatible material before committing the complete panel.

If the bitmap originated from a 3D object, preserve the editable model before converting it. Better source preparation may be more effective than repairing a flattened image later.

Should I delete every branch shorter than a fixed length?

No universal cutoff distinguishes noise from intentional marks. Small letter strokes, map junctions and decorative tips may be short. Compare them with the original drawing and review the cleaned result at output size.

Does a clean Preview prove that the engraving will look right?

It establishes the planned geometry, not the material response. Wood grain, focus and selected engraving settings still affect the sample. Inspect both the previewed paths and a supervised physical proof.
