Build identity into every pattern piece

Do not rely on the thumbnail or a separate cutting list. Put a short code on or immediately beside each vector object: BAG-SIDE-L, BAG-SIDE-R, STRAP-1, and STRAP-2. If permanent marks are unsuitable, place the code in a non-output layer and use removable paper labels after cutting.

Natural leather varies across a single hide. Before nesting, inspect scars, loose fibre, thickness changes, and stretch. Place visible panels in compatible regions; use less prominent areas for hidden tabs or tests.

Accept leather for laser processing only when the supplier provides its composition and a current Safety Data Sheet, every finish, backing, coating, and adhesive is identified, and the complete material is compatible with current machine-manufacturer guidance. Exclude chrome-tanned or other chromium-bearing leather; PVC- or vinyl-backed faux leather; halogenated materials or coatings; and anything with an unknown finish, backing, coating, composition, or adhesive. “Vegetable-tanned” is not an automatic safety approval: require documentation that the complete product is chromium-free and compatible before testing. If evidence is incomplete or contradictory, do not process it.

Worked example: a mirrored tote side

Imagine a tote has two 520 mm side panels with asymmetric pocket holes. Duplicate the approved left-side vector, mirror the duplicate horizontally, and rename it SIDE-R immediately. Add a 20 mm orientation arrow above both pieces on a reference-only layer. Place paper labels L and R on the grain side of the hide. After nesting, compare the pocket-hole positions side by side: they should face inward as a pair, not overlap in the same orientation. Frame the total boundary and each critical opening before starting. When pieces leave the bed, apply their labels before moving another part.

Preflight checklist

  1. Confirm the material identity and safe-processing documentation.
  2. Decide which face will be visible and record it.
  3. Name every mirrored object with L or R.
  4. Separate cut, score, engraving, and reference layers.
  5. Check grain or stretch direction against the pattern requirement.
  6. Frame the layout and verify openings against the physical pattern.
  7. Test an offcut from the same hide region.
  8. Attend the machine and follow current ventilation and fire precautions.

Can I simply mirror the whole finished layout?

Usually not safely. Text, logos, hardware holes, and reference marks may also reverse. Mirror only the intended pattern geometry, then audit non-symmetrical features and labels.

How do I keep pairs together after cutting?

Apply removable L/R labels before clearing the work area, bundle each pair separately, and record any rejected piece. That prevents an unmatched replacement from silently joining a different hide lot.
