Export Laser Cut Tabs: Preserve the Actual Cut Path

A plain vector export should not be assumed to contain tabs or kerf adjustments that exist only in cut settings. When those details must travel with the design, inspect the generated cut geometry, export a separate copy, and reopen the export before handing it to another operator.

In the LightBurn 2.2 RC1 Early Access discussion, a user asked what Generate Path from Cut actually does. Staff explained its use for retaining properties such as tabs and kerf offsets in exported geometry. This optional release has not been tested here on TYVOK hardware. Keep approved stable production work available while evaluating it.

Distinguish an outline from the path that runs

A closed rectangle can remain visibly closed in the design while its cutting instructions include several interruptions. Those interruptions leave holding tabs in the material. If you export only the original rectangle, the receiving program may see a continuous closed contour with no reason to leave those bridges.

Kerf compensation creates a similar distinction: a nominal part boundary and its compensated cutting path need not have identical dimensions. Sending an already compensated path without saying so invites a second offset at the receiving machine.

Use a disposable export copy

  1. Save and close a protected copy of the approved X1S project before experimentation.
  2. Open a separately named working copy and identify only the contours to transfer.
  3. Review the enabled cutting settings, intended tab locations and any kerf compensation.
  4. Generate the path in the version that provides the feature, then inspect both the result and the source shapes in that working copy.
  5. Export the intended generated geometry. Reopen it in a clean document and measure a known span.
  6. Count the tab interruptions and inspect corners, curves and small details before delivery.

A participant in the same release discussion reported unexpected changes to original geometry during an experiment. Do not assume the operation leaves every source shape untouched. If the reopened export differs from the approved sample, stop and retain the original project while resolving the discrepancy.

For a file intended for TYVOK X1S 2026, specify the physical setup as well as the geometry. The product starts with an 800 × 800 mm work area; the longer 800 × 2000 mm layout requires the appropriate expansion. Exporting a path transfers neither that hardware configuration nor a validated cutting recipe. Check fit and material support separately.

Why are some bridges present even when I did not add tabs?

Uncut sections can have causes unrelated to intentional geometry. Compare the preview with the physical locations and record the pattern of isolated uncut sections before changing the design.

Can the recipient close all open paths to repair the exported file?

That may erase intentional tab gaps. Identify which paths are supposed to remain interrupted. For lettering that genuinely needs filled contours after panel splitting, repair each intended letter boundary separately from the tabbed cutting outlines.
