Topographic Map Shows Impossible Heights? Check the Data

If a topographic export gives a familiar riverside town several kilometers of relief, stop before cutting. Compare its minimum and maximum elevations with a trustworthy topographic source for exactly the same area. A convincing outline does not make the numbers inside it believable, and shrinking the stack will not repair incorrect elevation data.

The problem appeared in a recent TopoStack discussion: a user selected West Point, New York, and reported implausible relief and mostly empty layers. The author subsequently reported filtering elevation spikes and requested another export. That exchange is a reason to inspect a newly generated file, not proof that every location or previously saved file is correct.

Compare the range before changing the layer count

Write down the selected map boundary, stated units, lowest elevation and highest elevation. Check those against a reputable mapping agency's terrain information for the same boundary. Comparing a town center with an entire mountain district can produce a misleading disagreement, so keep the geographic extent consistent.

If the lowest value is unexpected, locate it in the preview if the tool permits. Ask whether it represents actual terrain, missing data, a water surface or a value the exporter should have excluded. Those are questions to investigate, not interchangeable diagnoses. Keep the original export and settings so the tool's maintainer can examine the same case.

Only after the numbers make sense should you choose the physical height. Model thickness is a design choice; terrain elevation is source information. Keeping those separate also helps when deciding between continuous relief and stacked wood layers.

Import the SVG into the intended laser software and inspect each layer without sending a job. Select one recognizable feature to follow through the stack. A hill should not disappear and reappear inexplicably because one export layer is missing. Number the parts in the working file before arranging them on wood.

Choose the machine layout after the map passes

The TYVOK X1S 2026 has an 800 × 800 mm starting configuration and an 800 × 2000 mm expansion path. Confirm the configuration you own and reserve space for material support. The available area helps arrange contour pieces; it does not validate geographic data. Use known laser-compatible stock and prove the selected thickness with a small sample before a full stack.

Should I reduce the relief scale until the preview looks normal?

Not while the original elevation range remains unexplained. That can hide the symptom while preserving the wrong proportions. Validate or replace the source first, then choose intentional vertical exaggeration and describe it accurately.

Does a flat lake mean the terrain export is broken?

Not necessarily. Land elevation and underwater depth are different information. Check bathymetry coverage for a layered lake map before expecting depth contours from a shoreline. A decorative model should never be presented as a navigation chart.
