Plan the actual job
Start with a pre-cut wooden ornament blank and build the longest-name version first. Keep a clear margin around the hanging hole and any decorative cutouts. Proof the family spelling as a single approved layout rather than approving names separately. Test the engraving on the same finish as the final blank; an unfinished sample does not establish the result on a coated ornament.
