Wood Engraving Indoors: Trace the Exhaust Route Before Starting
Before engraving wood indoors, trace where smoke actually goes. An enclosure contains emissions temporarily; it does not remove them. Confirm an outdoor exhaust or eligible filtration route, keep the process attended, and stop if smoke accumulates or returns to the room.

Observe the room after the brief test stops, not only while the fan runs. Smoke or odor that returns through an outlet, door or recirculating filter shows the route has not controlled the real exposure.

Does an enclosure make wood engraving safe indoors?
No. It is one control; emissions removal, eligible material, supervision and local requirements still matter.
Is an open window enough?

Can a filter handle every wood finish?
No. Filter eligibility and replacement limits depend on the system and contaminants.
Observe the complete air path
1. Identify the wood, glue, coating and finish.
2. Inspect every duct connection and the outside discharge point.
3. Check that replacement air can enter without reversing flow.
4. Run a brief supervised smoke-path observation on eligible scrap.
5. Stop on leakage, unusual odor, flame or visible accumulation.
Visible smoke returning indoors or collecting outside capture is a failed ventilation observation and ends the session.
