Print and Cut Targets: Put the Second Mark on the Opposite Corner

Place two registration marks far apart across both axes of a large sheet before using a Print and Cut style alignment workflow. Two marks near the same upper edge give a short baseline and provide less information about rotation across the full workpiece. Diagonal separation does not repair a slipping machine, but it makes the intended sheet geometry easier to check.

In a September 2026 LightBurn basswood discussion, the maker originally used two top-corner crosses; another participant suggested opposite corners. The same thread later uncovered a loose shaft connection behind a larger repeatability problem. That sequence is a reminder to validate motion separately from target layout rather than blaming every offset on one cause.

Lay out two useful targets

Put the first cross near one corner and the second toward the diagonally opposite corner, inside a stable border that will remain with the sheet during the alignment step. They must be easy to identify, safely reachable and separated by enough distance to represent both horizontal and vertical change. Keep the art between them where possible. Mark their order on the file and on a paper setup note so a flipped board does not reverse the selection accidentally.

Run a non-firing frame after alignment. If framing visibly misses the intended area, do not start the engraving. Test on inexpensive known laser-compatible stock before committing a customer panel. Target placement is a measurement aid, not a tolerance promise.

Fit the job to X1S 2026

The TYVOK X1S 2026 page describes an 800 × 800 mm starting arrangement and an expanded 800 × 2000 mm path where configured. Check the actual machine, working area, material support and software profile before planning large-sheet marks. Keep the material flat, ventilate and supervise the process.

Will diagonal marks always fix a five-millimeter offset?

No. They help reveal rotation and sheet geometry, but repeatability, homing, material movement and software selection can all create offset. Stop the job and isolate the cause on a small test.

Can the marks sit outside the usable sheet?

No. Both marks must exist on a stable, reachable part of the real workpiece or its controlled fixture. A mark that disappears during cutting cannot register the next operation.
